Three-Day Quote Challenge: Day 1

I know it’s Tuesday, but I could not come up with anything for the #BlogBattle that wasn’t rubbish.  So battle on BlogBattlers…hope to see you next week!!

So today I am going to start my Three-Day Quote Challenge (see rules below).  Thanks to my fellow #BlogBattler, Marje @ Kyrosmagica for the nomination!!  3 quotes on 3 consecutive days…here we go!!

Day 1

Oh so simple. I think Meryl Streep, is such a beautiful, classy lady.  I actually just came across this one yesterday, and it is something I realized not too long ago.  I would plan, and talk and dream and think about doing something, but never took one step in doing it.  Plans are good, but even the best laid plans are just that, if they are not executed, or started!!
Rules for Three-Day Quote Challenge

• Thank the blogger, who nominated you.

• Publish 3 quotes on 3 consecutive days in your blog. It can be your own, or from a book, movie or from anyone who inspires you.

• Nominate 3 more bloggers to carry on this endeavour.

Here are my nominees:

Happy Homemaker Monday 08/17

HHMIt was a very hot weekend, so I stayed in and enjoyed the AC.  I did sit out in the yard for a while as my youngest son ran through the sprinkler, which was watering our somewhat burnt grass  😦  With the Chicago Air Show this weekend going on, we had several fly-overs of some really cool planes, as they use our airspace over the lake to turn around and head back to the Gary Airport.  Actually on Friday morning, we saw two Blue Angels fly over very low, and we got a good look at them as they went by.    We also felt the roaring of the jets since they were so low.  The Air Show is probably pretty awesome, but heat and crowds for me don’t mix, I catch the recap on TV 🙂  Have a great week everyone!!

Haven’t started anything new, but you can read my full review of First and Goal by Jake Byrne here.

NEW RECIPE I TRIED OR WANT TO TRY THIS WEEK:
OK, so this is a first, I am sharing this recipe with you all, it’s a brand new recipe from a possibly up and coming chef, (or maybe just a guy who will never go hungry, lol).  My youngest son concocted this all on his own the other night when he wanted a snack.  I give to you The…

Cinnamon Chocolate Pack

1 loaf white bread, crusts removed
Chocolate Chips (4 for each slice of bread)
¾ Cup Melted butter
1 Cup Sugar
1½ teaspoon ground cinnamon

Mix cinnamon and Sugar together in a bowl.  Flatten bread with a rolling-pin.  In the middle of the bread, line the 4 chocolate chips in a line, trying not to get too close to the edge.  Roll slice of bread up, jelly roll style.  Dip in melted butter, then in cinnamon and sugar mixture.  Place on an ungreased baking sheet.  Bake at 350° for 20 minutes or until golden brown.

While baking make the Glaze.

Glaze

1/2 cups confectioners’ sugar
3 to 4 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoons vanilla extract

Mix all together until smooth.  Take rolls from oven let cool slightly, then drizzle over each roll.

They are actually pretty good, I like the chocolate and cinnamon flavors together.  They do resemble another recipe I made with different ingredients, but hey, I applaud his ingenuity. 🙂

WHAT I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO:
Hopefully the Sidewalk Chalk drawing contest won’t get rained out on Saturday.  I was mistaken on one of my other posts about the Murder Mystery at the library; that will be in September.  This is my final week of summer, we will be starting school on next Monday.

FAVORITE VIDEO/BLOG POST:
My daughter showed me this trailer some time ago, this movie looks so cute.

INSPIRATIONAL QUOTES (PRAYERS OR DEVOTIONALS):

Just in time for Football Season

I was so excited to get this book in the mail from my dear friend Holly Michael.  This is the book her and her son, Jake Byrne, worked together on.  I have been following her on her blog and social media and their progress as they both fulfill the dreams they set out to pursue; she as an author and he as an NFL player.  It’s been an amazing journey for both of them.  Here is my review of the book…I give it 5 stars…2 thumbs up…and my very own Touch Down Dance!! (yeah…nobody wants to see that).  Anniehow…on with the review:

 First and Goal
What Football Taught Me About Never Giving Up
by Jake Byrne

At age 14 Jake was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, he did not let that slow him down, or stop him from pursuing his dreams to play football, all through high school, college and ultimately in the NFL.  He shares his triumphs and his struggles in such a heartfelt, real way, that you cannot help but find a nugget in this book to apply to your life as well.

The one thing I noticed is that this book is categorized under Youth Nonfiction, being a mom to 3 boys myself I was thinking how much they would enjoy reading it.  But I have to say this book is for anyone facing any type of struggles in their life.  It really encouraged me personally.  As a football fan, I enjoyed how the book was set up with the different football terms being defined, and then using those examples with life experiences.  If you’re not a football fan, you will not get lost in the jargon.  What I think I enjoyed most were Jake’s life stories, the fun antics he describes with his siblings and friends.  This tells me that he has a full life filled with love from family and friends, but it does not overshadow the love he has for God; that shines through as he encourages his reader to look to God for strength to help them through whatever they struggle with.

I found it so fitting that his mom, Holly Michael’s, contribution is under the Extra Point category.  This brief jog down memory lane completes the book in such a way that I now understand why whenever the camera zooms in on any football player on the sidelines, the first thing they say is “Hi Mom.”  Because it is the prayers and pure love of a mom that strengthened and encouraged him as he worked diligently to get to where he is today.

This is a great read for anyone, especially our young people who face so many obstacles on a daily basis.  If you click on the picture above, it will take you to Amazon where you can order the book yourself, you won’t be disappointed…you might even be encouraged!! 🙂

If you know of anyone who is living with type 1 diabetes, you can direct them to Jake’s Type Won Facebook page.

Master Penman…Who Knew?

I came across this fascinating video.  I never knew there was such a thing as a Master Penman, I can imagine the years of study and practice it must take to become one.  Since I love to write, how awesome would it be to have that title, it sounds so prestigious and regal.  Well since there are only 12 Master Penmen in…the…world…I’ll just be happy to get back into lettering, I did take some calligraphy classes when I was younger, so I need a refresher course and lots of practice. I’m looking into finding some nice pens, and watching videos on You Tube, there is something also called Round Lettering I’d like to give a go at.  I’ve been inspired!!

This guy obviously does more than lettering though, simply Beautiful!!

These are only a few of the pictures that can be purchased on his website at jakeweidmann.com

#BlogBattle: Time – Week 22 – Sparkles in Time

Tuesday = #Blogbattle

#BlogBattle is a weekly short story challenge using a single word for inspiration.  Hosted by the talented Rachael Ritchey.  Feel free to join in, or click here to read the current week’s stories and vote for your favorites.

This week’s word:  Time

Sparkles in Time

“It’s time Mr. Jensen.”  The nurse quietly says as she gently rests her hand on my shoulder.  I look up into the most caring eyes I have ever seen.  How can she do this every day and still be so compassionate?

I pull myself up from my chair, and she says kindly, “Go down to the end of the hall, make a left and it’s the first door on the right.”

I begin my journey down the pristine hallway, brightly lit with a faint scent of disinfectant.  Behind my eyes flash all kinds of memories; sparkles in time like fireworks that split the night sky.  Memories of our walks along the beach, with the sun warming her face, and the cool water splashing her feet.  She always loved nature, I ‘m not sure which season she liked best, crunching leaves in the fall, walking in the first snow fall, or finding the first flower bud of spring.  She also loved being with her family, on holidays, during the mundane day to day tasks, or just watching movies…and oh how she loved our kids, how she would do anything to comfort them and keep them safe.  My heart is heavy as I try to fathom how we will manage without her.  I loved how she would greet me each day when I came home; you could just see the love and joy radiating from her body.  But how can I be sad when I know she had a perfect life, filled with happiness and love, she, the perfect companion.  I am then taken back to the first day I laid eyes on her.  I was introduced to her on Christmas Eve, and how fitting it was that her name was Holly, and she even wore a red ribbon, this memory causes me to smile, she looked so adorable.

Just then I reach out, my hand grasps the door handle and the cold steel jolts me from my reverie, and plunges me into reality.  I know once I cross this threshold, my life will be changed forever.

I open the door, and there I see my wife.  Our eyes lock and its almost as if time stands still.  Even though her face is blotchy, her eyes are the most vibrant green I have ever seen, probably intensified by the red puffiness that has overtaken her lids, but she has never looked more beautiful to me.  The absence of tears makes me realize that she is now trying desperately to be strong, which makes me love her even more, if that is at all possible.  My arms ache to hold her, so I quickly close the gap between us with two long strides.  When I reach her, she collapses in my arms, all I can do is hold on tight.  I strengthen her with my embrace and then I look down at where Holly is lying, her breathing a bit labored.  I stroke her soft, auburn fur, and I say to her, “Hey girl, it will soon be over, we’ll miss you so much.”  Together my wife and I continue to caress her fur, whispering comforting words as the vet injects the serum that will bring her peace.  Her eyes flutter closed and she takes her last breath.

That same nurse is there by our side, she ushers us into a room where we can spend a few more moments to grieve.  Before she leaves she places Holly’s collar in my wife’s hand.  The familiar jingle of her tags, which once symbolized vibrant life, now clanged with a hollow sound of a life gone but never to be forgotten.

Holly was my wife’s Irish Setter, a gift I gave her the Christmas after she started her chemo treatments.  My wife always wanted an Irish Setter, and Holly was there by her side on the good days, and the bad.  I knew that love from family and the unconditional love of a pup would strengthen my wife during her battle.  Holly grew to be the life force in our family, always there for each one of us, with a warm nuzzle or just her comforting presence.  My wife is now cancer free, though the irony is not lost on me the fact that the reason Holly was brought into our life, is the same reason she was taken out of it.  I am grateful that her cancer came later, after she lived a full life and that she didn’t suffer long.  Still, knowing that will not fill the whole in our hearts.  Only time will mend that void in our hearts with memories that sparkle so bright from a love so pure.
